After a four-night Vet stay, Gracie was strong enough to go home with Sarah and Mike. Her care has since become a full-time job.
She still looks like a walking skeleton, and she is most likely blind. She also has been having seizures that could simply be from stress, hypoglycemia, a lingering virus, head trauma or a permanent neurological condition.
At her last Vet visit, Gracie was slightly hypoglycemic, anemic, and had high red/white blood cell counts. The high blood cell counts could simply be the stress that her body has been through, but they also could mean an infection, so she is currently on around of antibiotics. In addition, she gets sugar paste for her hypoglycemia, which should help raise her blood sugar levels.
Gracie's seizures are really hard to watch, especially now that she has the strength to cry between the attacks (which can last from 5-10 minutes). They also seem to set her back both physically and mentally. Recently, she has been walking better and exploring. She seems less shaky. However, after a seizure, she remains disoriented and weak for about an hour or two.
Because she has to be fed five times a day, and because you have to watch her constantly when she is out of the crate, her care has really been like a full-time job for Mike and Sarah. Her condition is emotionally taxing and Gracie is still day-to-day in terms of her health.
Mike and Sarah have given Gracie a loving home and continued care and affection. Unfortunately, nursing a near-death dog to health will be an expensive endeavor.
Anything you can contribute, no matter how small, will impact Gracie's recovery. It will go to her special diet, medicine and vet care. Thank you for your part in Gracie's recovery!
You guys rock! So wonderful, amazing, touching and sad. Job well done!
